Treating depression and anxiety during pregnancy and beyond baby’s birth

Experiencing postpartum depression or postpartum anxiety, but feeling like you’re alone in your experience?

Read about my own struggles and recovery below…

My experience is similar in a lot of ways to the stories of so many of the caregivers I’ve worked with in the therapy room. Maybe you’re reading my story and it feels similar to yours too.

Some other symptoms of depression and anxiety during pregnancy and beyond include:

Feeling isolated and alone :: feeling hopeless and/or worthless :: Numb :: Angry outbursts and more irritable than usual :: Increased conflict with your partner or support system :: Loss of appetite :: Insomnia(not sleeping) or hypersomnia(sleeping more than usual) :: loss of interest in things you used to enjoy :: constant worry and fear in general or over imagined harm befalling self/baby/family :: Having daily thoughts about death or dying :: Having recurring thoughts about harming yourself or your child

If you’re struggling with signs of depression or anxiety right now, I want you to know…

You are Not Alone

You Are Not to Blame

With Help You Will Be Well

What First Time Clients Often Ask About

  • I take an emotionally focused, attachment focused, & trauma informed approach to psychotherapy.

    • You’ll be listened to, validated, and have someone that will be present with you in the here and now.

    • You’ll get therapeutic resources, feedback, and tools that will allow you to make changes so that you can start feeling better sooner rather than later.

    • You’ll be helped in becoming aware of the pattern of thoughts and behaviors that have been helping you survive but not thrive.

    • With the evidenced based counseling tools/techniques you gain in therapy, you’ll also gain the opportunity to get “un-stuck” by incorporating new patterns to help reduce your distress, help you connect with your core authentic self, and increase your overall joy and confidence.

To be sure, you can begin to feel better with therapy, but you’re not always going to feel “good” at every step of the process.

In fact, you may find it really difficult and scary at times to confront all of the emotions and wounds that come up for you in the therapy room.

This is a NORMAL and COMMON experience.

However, I want you to know that I make every effort to tune into my clients throughout this process in order to create safety and go at the pace that’s right for them.

  • Updated December 2023

I am currently seeing clients via tele-health only.

We can work together virtually via a HIPPA secure video conferencing platform. Either over google meets or Doxy.me.

What You’ll Need For Telehealth Sessions:

For video conferencing therapy, all you would need is a phone, tablet, or computer with a high speed internet connection and a webcam. It is important that you find a safe, secure, and quiet space during sessions for the purposes of confidentiality. Babies/toddlers are welcomed during your sessions.

More information and instructions about conducting therapy services via Telehealth will be discussed prior to our first initial therapy session.

Please Note: A common concern and question about sessions conducted over a video conferencing platform is that they may be recorded without the client’s expressed knowledge and consent. Please rest assured that sessions will NEVER be recorded.

  • Individual Psychotherapy Session Fee

    $100.00 per 50min session

    Couples/Family Psychotherapy Session Fee

    $160.00 per 60min session

All psychotherapy fees are charged and paid securely online via email through the HIPPA compliant payment platform SquareUp, where all major credit/debit cards are accepted.

My practice is in-network with the insurance carriers: Cigna, Aetna, Oxford, United Healthcare, & Oscar Health

I am also able to provide you with a super bill if you are covered by a PPO insurance plan with out-of-network benefits. I use Thrizer.com to onboard clients who would like to use their out-of-network benefits to help pay my established therapy fee. This is further explained and discussed with my clients before beginning therapy.

  • The amount of sessions needed for any given individual to achieve set goals, decrease distress, and complete treatment is different for each client and depends on a variety of factors.

On average, it is likely that we may need to meet for at least 12-26 therapy sessions in order to make progress and achieve goals set at the start of treatment. However, this is by no means a guarantee and is only an estimate.

Luckily, the nature of therapy means that you are able to continue and stop therapeutic services at any time and for whatever reason, as this is a completely voluntary process.

Some clients choose to pause treatment for a period of time and then return to therapy as needed to address new challenges/goals.

Change and healing is never linear.

  • This too is not easy to answer because it very much depends on the severity of symptoms—how bad you feel and how urgent it is to help alleviate your distress for the well-being of you and, if you’re a parent, your child/children.

I have worked with clients who have not needed medication to successfully treat their symptoms of depression and/or anxiety.

I have also worked with clients for whom medication was essential to ensure that they were able to begin the healing process and progress in treatment.

It’s important to note that in both scenarios, neither client was weaker or stronger because they opted in or out of taking medications. Both clients just made choices, together with their mental health providers, as to what treatment options would work best for them. Both clients were actually pretty brave to reach out and seek help in the first place.

Taking psychotropic medications for the treatment of a mood disorder is just like taking insulin for diabetes or a medication to treat a heart condition. Some people with diabetes or a heart condition may need or not need to take a medication. It’s just one tool and treatment option, among others, that can help a person with a health condition be well.

Psychotropic medications, combined with psychotherapy, are one of the best treatment options for many suffering with a PMAD and just one of the many options available to help a mother heal from a PMAD. Your treatment should be tailored to your specific circumstances and needs and what would be the best course of treatment for you. This may or may not include medication.

All options will be discussed at the start of treatment and you will have the opportunity to ask questions and share your concerns.

Ultimately, the choice will always be yours to opt in or out of starting a medication protocol. Moreover, you can decide at any point during psychotherapy to start medication. You can also choose to stop taking medications at any point during treatment with the aid of your prescribing psychiatrist—as many psychotropic medications have to be weaned off slowly and under medical supervision.

    The choice is always yours.

  • No.

My specific license and scope of practice under Florida law would not allow me to prescribe any form of medication or provide medication management.

However, if medication seems to be a good option for you and you’d like to explore this option further, I will provide you with referrals to trained and qualified Psychiatrists who will be able to assess your specific treatment needs and prescribe medication accordingly.

You will still be able to continue psychotherapy with me while under the care of your psychiatrist for medication management.

  • Yes, of course!

Finding a therapist is like dating, you may have to do some trial runs with a few therapists before you find the one that’s right for you. It is likely that I’m not a good fit for you. That’s ok and you shouldn’t give up the search.

You are never obligated to continue psychotherapy with me or any therapist. It is completely voluntary and you can opt out if you wish at any time.

I always want what’s best for my clients and this includes feeling fully comfortable with the clinician they’re working with. If that clinician isn’t me, I want them to let me know right away and find the clinician who will be. They deserve it and so do you.

Taking The First Step Can Feel Scary…

You may believe that you’ll be stuck in this feeling and experience forever.

You may believe you’re the only one feeling this way and no one has ever felt this bad.

You may feel shame and guilt for not having it all together—for breaking down.

These “should be” the happiest days of your life right?

When they aren’t and instead are filled with overwhelming and unbearable sadness/numbness/panic/insomnia, you may believe that it’s hopeless and nothing and no one will be able to help you get unstuck.

But, these thoughts/beliefs show up when our brains are on depression and anxiety. Your brain can lie and shift your reality when it’s been drowning in stress for too long.

Fact is— YOU CAN START TO FEEL BETTER AND THERE ARE WAYS TO GET UNSTUCK!

There are proven treatment approaches available that can help you find relief and help you get back to yourself again—and it can start with psychotherapy.
